ICAR–NOFRI Organized Training cum Skill development program on Organic Vegetable production at high altitudes
ICAR-National Organic Farming Research Institute, Tadong, Gangtok in collaboration with Thegu Military Station organized Training cum Skill Development Program on Organic Vegetable Production at high altitudes for the tribal farmers of Thegu (13,200 ft above MSL) and Kupup (Appx. 14,000 ft above MSL) villages of East Sikkim on June 30, 2019 in order to create awareness and transfer of technology on organic vegetable crop production under All India Coordinated Research Project on Plasticulture Engineering and Technology under the guidance and leadership of Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR–NOFRI, Tadong. A total 61 nos. (Thegu 36 no. and Kupup 25 no.) of tribal farmers participated in the program. During the program, untreated vegetable seeds, organic pesticides, biofertilizer and plastics for construction of low cost protected structures were distributed to the progressive farmers.
Dr. Ashish Yadav, Senior Scientist (Horticulture), ICAR-NOFRI, Tadong coordinated the program and shared the organic production technology for organic vegetable cultivation at high altitudes under low cost protected structures especially during summer and rainy season which can empower the high altitude farming community and their livelihood status. During the visit, Dr. Yadav also visited greenhouse at Military Station, Thegu and discussed about the offseason organic vegetable production in greenhouse with the Military officials.
Mr. Lakpa Sherpa, Village Mukhiya, Thegu Village and Mr. Nima Sherpa, President HNYSSS, Kupup, East Sikkim thanked the Joint Director, ICAR-NOFRI for organizing program and imparting knowledge regarding agricultural practices and also for providing quality inputs to them. Mr. Bandan Chettri and Mr. Naveen Chand Yadav assisted actively in organizing the program.
